A person does not need a title to matter. What they need is work that can be examined, and somebody willing to examine it properly.

01 / How somebody enters the record

Somebody nominates them, or we find them

Most people in this record will not have nominated themselves. They will have been named by somebody who has watched them work. We also look actively, in places where this kind of work is usually not looked for.

We check the work, not the reputation

What exists that would not exist without them? Who else says so, who has nothing to gain by saying it? A reputation can be built by repetition. A contribution leaves evidence behind.

We sit with them, at length

Recorded, transcribed, and rarely in under two hours. We ask what they saw that others missed, what it cost, what failed, and what they would do differently. Then we go and speak to other people about the same events.

The record is made, and it is permanent

The published piece is an edit. Underneath it sits the interview, the transcript, the dates, the decisions, the photographs of the work itself, the sources and the permission that lets us hold all of it. That is what makes it a record rather than an article.

02 / The anatomy of a record

Every record is built the same way.

So that in fifteen years a researcher can compare two hundred of them and find something that no single profile could ever show. The consistency is the point. It is also why the first record has to be built properly, because every one after it inherits the shape.

Record number

Sequential and permanent. A record is never renumbered and never deleted. If something is later found to be wrong, the correction is added to the record rather than replacing it.

Place and date

Where the work is happening and when this record was made. A record is a snapshot of a person in the middle of something, not a final judgement on them.

Field

Business, science, technology, government, education, culture, sport, community, agriculture, health. Recorded plainly, because the pattern across fields is one of the things we want to be able to see later.

The work

What exists because of them. Written so that a reader who has never heard of this person or this sector understands it inside one paragraph.

What they saw

The judgement underneath the work. What was obvious to them and not to the people around them, and when.

What they did

The decision, or the sequence of decisions. Not the personality. The specific thing that was chosen when something else could have been chosen.

What it cost

Money, relationships, years, health, reputation, the thing they gave up to do this. A record without this section is publicity.

What failed

The attempts that did not work and what was learned. This is the section people are most reluctant to give and the section that is most useful to everybody who comes after.

What made it possible

The conditions that had nothing to do with them. Timing, a family, a teacher, a country, a policy, a piece of luck. Leaving this out is how a profile becomes a myth.

What they would tell

Advice for somebody twenty years younger, in their own words, quoted rather than paraphrased.

The evidence

Photographs of the work itself, documents, figures, and the people who corroborated it.

Permissions

What this person agreed to, in writing, including the right to be recorded, published and held in the archive for the long term.

03 / What this is not

Nobody pays to be here

Not a fee, not a sponsorship, not a table at a dinner. There is no version of this record that money buys a place in, and there never will be.

Funders do not choose

An organisation may support this institution. It does not decide who enters the record, and it does not see a record before it is published.

It is not a ranking

No positions, no scores, no annual reshuffle. Records are made in the order the work is done, not in order of importance.

It is not only for the successful

Somebody in the middle of a difficult attempt that may still fail belongs in this record. That is often when the useful material exists.

It is not a press release

People are asked what failed and what they got wrong. If somebody will not answer those, we do not publish a version that pretends we did not ask.

It is not permanent praise

A record documents a contribution at a moment. If later evidence changes the picture, the record is updated in public rather than quietly taken down.

The record is open. It starts with somebody you already know.

The first records are being made now. They are not published yet because a profile assembled from a website is not a profile, and this institution would rather have an empty page than a padded one.

Most of the people who belong in this record will never put themselves forward. They will be named by somebody who has watched them work and thought, quietly, that more people should know what this person is doing.
